Byron K. Lichtenberg, Sc.D., was born on February 19, 1948, in Stroudsburg, PA and graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1968. He holds several degrees, including an honorary Sc.D. from Westminster College, a Sc.D. in biomedical engineering from MIT (1979), an S.M. in mechanical engineering from MIT (1975), and a Sc.B. in aerospace engineering from Brown University (1969). Lichtenberg has received notable awards such as two NASA Space Flight Medals, the AIAA Haley Space Flight Award, and the FAI Komorov Award. He is a founding member of the Association of Space Explorers, the X-Prize Foundation, and the International Space University. Lichtenberg is also a member of the User Panel for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, as well as honorary engineering and scientific societies. In 1992, he flew on the STS-45 mission (ATLAS-1), conducting experiments in atmospheric sciences and astronomy. Lichtenberg has accumulated 310 orbits and 468 hours in space.
